DES MOINES, Iowa (TCD) — Three people have been arrested after a school shooting targeting at-risk youngsters left two students dead and a teacher injured.
On Monday, January 23, Des Moines Police tweeted that officers and firefighters were at the scene of a shooting at 455 SW 5th Street with three people injured, two seriously. The two victims who were seriously injured died in hospital, according to the police.
Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek says WOI-TV the third victim is a “school employee” and had surgery.
The shooting took place at the Starts Right Here charter school. According to their website, Starts Right Here “is a program designed to serve youth in a supportive and empowering environment. All young people deserve a chance to rise above the circumstances into which they were born and reach their mental, emotional, physical and economic potential. »
In a press release, Des Moines police said about 20 minutes after the shooting, officers conducted a traffic stop two miles away and arrested “several suspects.”
parizek said two of the suspects remained in the car, while one person fled. Officers deployed a K-9 and “found them.”
The three people are in custody and questioned by the police.
Parizek said at the press conference that the shooting “was definitely targeted.”
He added: “It was not random. There was nothing random about it. It was definitely a targeted incident. »
